Regional Director David Mancera supported Victor throughout the purchase process. Together, they completed crop and cash flow plans and determined the long-term financial sustainability of the land purchase. The 11 acres in Chualar includes farmable acreage and a house, meaning a new home not only for La Granjita but for Victor and his wife Veronica, as well.
How does Victor feed our future? Victor sells his products via wholesalers throughout the Bay Area. No stranger to expermination, his dream is for La Granjita’s fields to emulate a salad: a mix of colors and textures and flavors; some tried and true, some unexpected. Most recently, his crop of Mexican sour gherkins has been popping up around the Bay.
Libby Batzel & Ali Levesque, Beet Generation Farm
Grew their value-added pasta line into new market channels, like Healdsburg SHED, creating a sustainable year-round revenue stream
KitchenTable Advisors connected Libby and Ali to a design firm that worked with them to develop branding and packaging for the pasta line, pro bono, a Volunteer Farm Advisor that helped them think through merchandising the product and folks from Healdsburg SHED, a local market that now sells the products. Meanwhile, Regional Director Thomas Nelson not only works with Libby and Ali to track sales and manage the pasta revenue in the greater context of the business’ finances, but is available for any type of questions, from HR to reviewing potential leases as they grow into a commercial kitchen space.
How do Libby & Ali feed our future? Libby and Ali dream of shattering stereotypes of “what a farmer should be.” They lovingly share the food they grow with their Sonoma County community, building relationships with their customers and spreading their passion for eating good food.
Airielle Love & Kaeleigh Carrier, Fly Girl Farm
Outfitted an off-the-grid farm office with using solar panels purchased with a $5,000 grant from The Fruit Guys Community Fund.
Within weeks of Airielle & Kaeleigh joining the program, Regional Director Sarah Gearen worked with them to fill out an application for funds to install solar panels on an office shed they were building on the farm. Since receiving the grant, the improvements have made a world of difference. Airielle & Kaeleigh now have a home base for their business, complete with access to electricity and wifi to take care of vital tasks, such as managing accounts via email and scheduling meetings (which is essential on a farm with spotty cell service).

Kristyn Leach, Namu Farm
Leased new land and moved farm operation to Winters, CA.
Regional Directors Paige Phinney and Thomas Nelson provided Kristyn with moral support and coaching throughout the process of exploring the new lease opportunity, and ultimately deciding to undertake the daunting task of moving her operation. In Namu Farm’s new home, Kristyn has the opportunity to connect with a network of seasoned farmers, increase her quality of life and the potential for greater long term land stability.
How does Kristyn feed our future? Kristyn’s journey within agriculture is inspired both by a desire to rethink and reshape an extractive food system, and by a passion for facilitating cultural connections. She focuses her practices on minimal and no-till methods, and manages a seed preservation project in partnership with local, long-running seed company, Kitasawa.
Helena & Matt Sylvester, Happy Acre Farm
Increased their revenue by 40%, through new farmers markets and restaurant accounts (and grew their family with Baby August!).
Regional Director Thomas Nelson worked with Helena and Matt to strategize ways to increase their revenue while not overextending themselves as they grew their family. They built a cash flow to assess how their market channels synced with crop production, and made a plan to grow their revenue streams in way that supported their capacity as business owners, and as new parents. With Thomas’ support, they opened themselves up to exploring new income streams while making tough decisions around putting their CSA program on hold, building the confidence and resilience needed to sustain their business long-term.
How do Helena & Matt feed our future? Helena and Matt farm in the same county where they grew up, because they are committed to bringing fresh, sustainable produce to their community. Most recently, they aggregated food from theirs and other farms and delivered it to those affected by The Camp Fire.
Javier Cruz, Cruz Martinez Farm
Implemented crop planning strategies to optimize production of all 30 acres they currently lease.
When Cruz Martinez Farm joined Kitchen Table Advisors in 2017, Javier Cruz had just jumped in to support his parents Melecio and Teodora in managing their farm operations. Regional Director David Mancera worked with Javier to create crop plans and cash flow planning. Not only were Javier and his parents able to grow their production from the five acres they were cultivating to the entire 30 acres they lease in Chowchilla, California, but they began to understand the farm as a business and to see the ways in which planning and tracking could help them achieve their goals. Now that they have maxed out their existing acreage, Javier and David are working to determine whether there are additional ways to optimize their crop planning or if they can secure additional land to expand their production.
How does Javier feed our future? Javier grew up helping his parents Melecio and Teodora, who first began farming in their native Oaxaca, as did many of their employees and much of their community in Madera County. Cruz Martinez dedicates a portion of their crop planning to cultivating specialty products for local Oaxacan markets as a way to connect with and nourish their community.
