Farm owner Caleb Barron and Chef Preeti Mistry are committed to keeping traditional practices alive and sustainable. At Fogline Farm in Soquel, Caleb ensures that things are done in the most ecologically responsible way possible while Preeti focuses on time-honored Indian cooking techniques at Oakland’s Juhu Beach Club. Together they will present a special dish for the upcoming Grazing at the Kitchen Table fundraiser, with pasture-raised chicken and organic vegetables from Fogline and Preeti’s creative touch in the kitchen.
What excites you the most about this partnership?
Caleb: Kitchen Table Advisors has given me the confidence to succeed as a small farmer, and I’ve had the privilege to work with a lot of chefs, so being able to collaborate with another chef is a plus.
Preeti: I work with a number of small farmers, and I see this as an opportunity to get to know another farm in the area. I’m excited to build more awareness about what it means to cook with local and sustainable food.
How does local food inspire you?
Preeti: People talk about all these cooking techniques, but you don’t need them if you have good ingredients.
Caleb: I love working with my hands and working outdoors. It’s a bonus for me that I can support myself with a job I enjoy.
Tell us about an experience you had working with local produce.
Preeti: One of our servers is a farmer. She’ll tell customers, “I grew those beets on your pickle plate.” There’s mutual inspiration between us. I’ll ask her to grow me something and she will show up with an ingredient like kohlrabi. I might not know I needed it, but it can inspire me.
Caleb: When we have dining events on the farm, we get to see things come together and how people have traveled from far and wide for an amazing meal. I didn’t expect that what I do would excite people so much.
