Husband and wife Victor and Veronica dedicate their days to harvesting an essential part of any at-home recipe: the culinary herbs we use to add depth of flavor to our dishes.

Their focus on herbs began more than two decades ago. Victor first arrived in the United States from Guanajuato in 2000, working at a company that specialized in organic herbs. There, he met Veronica, who shared his passion in working with the land. Veronica’s dad had inspired her love of farming, having previously worked in agriculture. Victor, on the other hand, came from a welding background. During their time together at the herb company, their interest in farming grew as they learned more about agriculture.

At the encouragement of friends, the couple completed a small business incubator course at the Agriculture and Land-based Training Association (ALBA). After completing their training, Victor and Veronica started working with one acre of land; in 2015, they officially established their business, Buena Vista Organics.

Now, they lease 7.5 acres, across which they grow and harvest produce such as rosemary, thyme, chives, oregano, mint, tarragon, laurel, and sage, selling to wholesale distributors. For the couple, farming is not only about cultivating crops, but doing so while taking care of the earth. They continue to incorporate practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, compost application, and have built micro-tunnels. They hope to one day achieve zero-spray status.

Victor and Veronica’s three daughters also help with the business, but the couple wants them to follow whichever life path calls to them. Each day, the couple makes the 15-minute commute from home to the farm, focusing on their passion: producing high quality crops.

Advising Snapshot: 2025

Victor and Veronica began working with KTA in 2018 and currently work with Senior Farm Business Advisor Favio Ortiz. With Favio’s encouragement they participated in the Farmers Market Incubator program in 2024. The farmers market incubator program, co-launched by KTA, the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM), and the Agriculture and Land-based Training Association (ALBA), is designed to support BIPOC, first-generation farmers who have lacked access to direct-to-consumer market streams. The couple participated in the incubator for about seven months, rotating between the three locations. Ultimately, from that experience Victor and Veronica realized that farmers markets are currently not their ideal channel. The program was a significant experience, allowing them to try a new market without taking a big financial risk and allowing them to figure out what works best for their business.

Through their work with previous KTA advisors, Victor and Veronica have learned more about organizations such as Veggielution, a non-profit community farm in San Jose. Victor and Veronica say that their conversations with Favio help them make informed decisions; with Favio’s insights, they’ve decided not to buy land at the moment, and instead focus on keeping their business sustainable. With KTA, they’ve been able to see the full picture, assessing every element instead of rushing into a decision. The couple is currently working with KTA to find funds that will help their business develop further.
