For San and Nai, their business, Yumm Strawberry Farm, is a continuation of their passion for agriculture. When the couple migrated to the U.S. from Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand, they brought their farming knowledge with them, having previously grown crops like taro root, dragon fruit, and durian. In the U.S., their initial focus was to cultivate and grow vibrant, delicious strawberries. They started growing strawberries in Redding and then moved to land in the Sacramento area and launched Yumm Strawberry Farm. A couple years later, they started leasing the land where they’re now located, first in West Sacramento and then adding a parcel in Elk Grove.

Currently, the family sells through on-farm stands and offers seasonal berry u-picks during the summer and fall.

Yumm Strawberry Farm operates as a family business: San and Nai’s daughter, Parada, runs the farm stand in Elk Grove while Nai, her mom, manages the stand in West Sacramento. In 2026, Parada will take on a larger role in the business by fully managing the Elk Grove property. San supports the family and farm by focusing on improving the strawberry varieties in service of offering the most delicious berries possible. In addition, they sell vegetables such as corn, garlic, onions, pumpkins, squash, peppers, snow peas, and beans at their West Sacramento location. In Elk Grove, customers can find apricots, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries alongside vegetables like corn, green onions, and garlic.

San and Nai say they were born to work outside, tending to the land and producing wholesome food. Through Yumm Strawberry Farm, the couple feels empowered to follow that passion everyday.

Advising Snapshot: 2025

San, Nai, and Parada started working with KTA Senior Farm Business Advisor Carine Hines in 2024 after being referred by University of California Agriculture & Natural Resources (UC ANR) Small Farms Advisor Margaret Lloyd. Based on Margaret’s focus of supporting Mien and Hmong farming communities with culturally relevant information and trainings, the family was working with her on a combination of general technical areas including disease management, variety selection, marketing, and more. With Carine’s guidance, the family has been learning about the organic certification process based on their commitment to avoiding pesticides.

In 2025, after working with Carine and Regional Program Coordinator David Vigil on the application, Yumm was awarded an Organic Transition Program grant from Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) to support creating their organic system plan.

Additionally, Carine assisted the family in leasing the Elk Grove property. Once settled onto both parcels, Carine helped them assess different markets while Farm Business Advisor Idara Phillips has focused on supporting infrastructure upgrades for their farm. Another celebratory milestone for Yumm was collaborating with Carine on setting up a bookkeeping system.

As the family continues to invest in their farm, San, Nai, and Parada are curious about growing their business further, hoping not only to lease more land but also create a destination where the community can gather to pick fruit and foster deeper connections.
