When Enrique Fernandez moved to the United States from Hidalgo in 1999, he was eager to learn about the agricultural industry and how the soil differed from the land back home. Since he was a teenager, Enrique learned how to grow his own food, the beginnings of a life-long passion for farming.

While pursuing agricultural jobs at large companies, Enrique noticed how they used pesticides and other chemicals in production. He quickly realized the negative effects of these practices on both farmworkers and consumers, an experience that sparked his interest in growing organic produce.

In 2022, a friend suggested that Enrique take part in the Organic Farm Incubator program at the Agriculture and Land-based Training Association (ALBA). He began planting on half an acre of land, and has since expanded to five acres, focusing primarily on organic broccolini, carrots, cauliflower, celery, peas, and green beans.

Enrique focuses on growing quality produce while helping the Earth, alongside his wife Maria, who is actively involved in the business. He and Maria hope to grow the business and create a bright future for their family, alongside maintaining their connection to the land.

Advising Focus Capital access; land access; business and financial planning

Business Goals Secure new land; increase acreage to continue growing the business

Advising Snapshot: 2026

Enrique began working with Farm Business Advisor Erika Vargas in early 2026. Erika has been supporting Enrique to organize his financial information and get ready to apply for loans. In addition, Enrique’s wife, Maria, has been learning more about zero-interest loan opportunities available through local organizations. Maria has already attended a Fondo Solidario meeting – a KTA Ecosystem Building project – and is interested in learning more and connecting with the other Latina farmers in her community to create impact.

With Erika’s guidance, Enrique will begin his search for new acreage once the current lease for his land ends. He hopes to continue growing his acreage in order to cultivate a greater variety of products.
