In Guerrero, Mexico, Federico watched his father plant and harvest corn, beans, and squash for their family to eat. This early introduction to cultivating food prepared him for a series of jobs in agriculture. Ever since his arrival in the United States 20 years ago, Federico has worked with products ranging from oranges to cherries, blueberries, and lettuce. With this range of experience, he geared up for his next step: starting his own business.
In 2018, he and his wife, Juana, decided to lease some land and officially start their business. They currently grow produce such as pumpkins, cucumbers, chiles, green beans, tomatoes, onions, fava beans, cauliflower, cabbage, daikon radishes, broccoli, cilantro, and beets. In 2020, they also started growing marigolds and coxcomb flowers for Dia de los Muertos celebrations. Their clients loved these special blooms, so they decided to expand their flower production. This gave them a chance to combine an important cultural tradition with what they love doing: planting seeds and caring for the earth.
The couple is also passing on this love for farming to their two kids, happily teaching them about the complex process of growing their food. Owning their business has given Federico and Juana more flexibility with their work schedules, which means they are able to spend more time together as a family. Federico proudly shares that his kids know the names of many of the farm’s vegetables, and hopes that the family tradition of sharing farming knowledge from generation to generation will continue.

Advising Focus Market access and expansion; organic certification; financial systems and management
Business Goals Expand clientele, increase acreage, and create processes for tracking finances
Advising Snapshot: 2026
In 2025, Federico and Juana began working with Senior Farm Business Advisor Laura Marquez to create processes for tracking their finances and making informed business decisions. With support from KTA, Federico is also considering transitioning all his crops to organic.
Federico is also looking to increase his organic acreage in the near future in order to grow more products and increase his clientele. With KTA’s guidance, he hopes to better streamline his business operations, including tracking his profits and losses in a more organized way, with the eventual goal of the family purchasing farmland in the future.
